Homebuyer Closing Day Checklist

1. Start Utility Services (Electric & Gas) – Day of Closing

a. Contact your utility provider(s) to transfer service into your name, effective immediately.

b. Verify if DTE provides both electric and gas or just electric (varies by city).

2. Transfer Water Service – Day of Closing

a. Some cities transfer water service automatically, but always confirm.

b. Call your city’s water department to notify them that you are the new owner.

c. Request paperless billing if available and ask about online payment options.

3. File Property Transfer Affidavit (PTA) – Day of Closing

a. Must submit the original form with wet signatures—copies are not accepted by the city.

4. Forward Mail / Change of Address

a. Online: USPS Change of Address

b. In-Person: Visit your local post office and complete PS Form 3575.

5. Obtain Copies of Essential Documents (Ask Your Agent)

a. Property Report

b. Inspection Report

c. Purchase Agreement

d. Copy of Deposit

e. Home Warranty Confirmation

6. Confirm Key Handover at Closing

a. Verify with your agent that you will receive the keys at closing.

b. Do not schedule moving services until you physically have the keys.

7. Home Warranty Documents

If you’ve accepted a home warranty, ensure you receive the necessary forms or packets from your agent.

Seller's Closing Checklist

1. Order Final Water Read

Call your city’s water department and advise them that you have moved and you need to get the final water read bill sent to you.

Please give this to your agent as it will be needed at closing.

Wayne County: To be done 4-30 days (The time varies)

Macomb County: To be done the same day as the closing

Oakland County: To be done 3 days prior to closing

***Please adjust for occupancy after closing***

2. Schedule Disconnection of Utility Services (DTE/Consumers)

✅ Should be done the day AFTER closing.

📞 Call your utility provider(s): Inform them that you’ve moved and request to disconnect

your service as of that day.

💧 Order your final water bill: It will be calculated and sent to you.

🏡 If you have occupancy after closing: Please schedule accordingly.

3. Forward Mail / Change of Address

🌐 Online: Visit www.USPS.com/move

📬 At the local Post Office: Fill out PS Form 35755

4. File Property Transfer Affidavit (PTA) – Day of Closing

Must be the original form with wet signatures (the city will not accept copies)

5. Make sure you get copies of the following

documents (ask your agent):

📑 Property Report: If needed/requested prior to closing

📝 Purchase Agreements and Disclosures: Either mail or email (inform your Agent)

🏠 Home Warranty Invoice: If ordered

6. Confirm how you will be receiving your funds from

the title company

💰 Wire Transfer or Check

⏳ Wires: Sent within 2 hours of closing

🏦 Checks: Given at closing

💧 Final Water Bill: Ensure it is ordered and sent to the title company—they will hold escrow if they don’t receive it
